Diatomite in paint can alter glass and sheen, extend primary pigments, add bulk and strength, control permeability and enhance coating adhesion. Diatomite in plastics can serve as an anti-blocking agent which helps in the separation of plastic parts in manufacturing.

Diatomite is commonly used as a feed supplement for cows and similar livestock. The tiny abrasive algae fossils are used as a de-wormer while also being added to livestock and poultry feed to prevent caking.
